In one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, Desmond Doss saved the lives of 75 of his comrades on the island of Okinawa without carrying a weapon. He had a religious conviction that although his country was fighting a just war, he himself should not kill. As a paramedic, he single-handedly brought out his wounded comrades from behind enemy lines or from the no-man’s land under fire, while he himself suffered serious injuries. Doss was the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, America’s highest military award.
